After news broke last week that Odell Beckham Jr. wouldn’t be available to play until the postseason, Dallas Cowboys media members and fans moved on from the possibility of signing the star WR.
But the man who calls the shots, Jerry Jones, still has his sights set on Beckham.
Jones told Jarrett Bell of USA Today that a deal is coming for OBJ. Jones said:
“Odell’s going to join us. There’s a good chance he will, with the complete goal of getting ready for a playoff game or two, and then I’ll look to the future. But most of it being about now.”
Odell has yet to officially sign with the Cowboys, and the terms of a potential deal haven’t been revealed. But Jones mentioned the move might happen after the Cowboys take on the Jacksonville Jaguars this week.
It’s unclear how much value OBJ holds for the long-term, considering the WR is 30 years old and tore his ACL in February. But Jones certainly sees Beckham’s short-term potential in the postseason:
“I’m hopeful we can get into some important games and have some Deion Sanders-type results. Could this be possible to have a great player like that get in two or three playoff games and make some significant plays? I think very much so. That’s not an exaggerated thought at all.”
OBJ’s timeline with the Cowboys
After Beckham tore his ACL in the Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl victory, the 2022 regular season rolled around and OBJ had yet to sign with a team. Since the WR wouldn’t be available to return until late in the regular season, he decided to weigh his options and sign with a team mid-season.
Dallas has been linked to Beckham since the beginning of his free agency saga, but things grinded to a halt last week when it was reported that OBJ wouldn’t be available to play until the playoffs.
While most Cowboys beat writers and fans moved on from the possibility of landing the WR, Jones remained consistent in his pursuit of Odell.
Now, Jones himself has made it clear that adding Beckham is a likelihood. Time will tell if a deal can get done, and what impact OBJ can bring to a Cowboys team that has Super Bowl aspirations.
